What was once a Union Depot along the stagecoach route from Nashville is
now a thriving community of 30,000. Today the stagecoach route that put
the city on the map is a Bartlett thoroughfare, appropriately named Stage
Road.
The area, which is north of Cordova and northeast of Memphis, offers
housing for everyone from first-time buyers to executives wanting a home
in the suburbs. As the geographic center of Shelby County, Bartlett is
accessible to Memphis via I-40 or Summer Avenue.
The city has embraced industry, creating a highly successful industrial
park in 1983. Brother Industries, which has its only North American
manufacturing facility in Bartlett, and Smith & Nephew Richards are two of
the large employers in the area. The 1990s have brought commercial growth,
including new shopping centers and retail and service businesses.
Residents of Bartlett take their recreation seriously, boasting 14 of the
finest parks in Shelby County and some of the best youth sports leagues to
be found. Other amenities include the children's chorus, concert band and
community theatre. A privately-owned golf course, with homesites adjacent
to it, opened in 1994.
There are nine public schools in Bartlett, operated by the Shelby County
Board of Education, as well as several private schools.
Bartlett offers the best of both worlds -- the quiet of the country within
minutes of the city.
